Handmade and bound

''Handmade & Bound is an independent fair with affordable, handmade artists’ books, comics and zines. It was conceived partly in response to the fact that there will be no London Artists book fair at the ICA in 2008, and further in response to the changes to the nature of that event when it returns in 2009 at the Whitechapel Art Gallery. So we decided to make our own.''
This is an exciting project that should happen more often to corner a market in book Art. Illustrators and writers need to combine forces in order to create inspiring and beautiful books to rival down loadable books via kindle.
Illustration is very much lacking in the majority of book sections and confined to children's books. Recently my head has been inside 'I wonder' book by Marian Bantjes, Gasping and woooahing at its beautiful approach to the ornament and typography. More of this please!

ASTRID KROUGH

''Like the faithful weaver depicted in Homer's Odyssey who wove textiles by day and unravelled them at night, Krough's work disappears as soon as the lights are turned off.''
 >This is a beautiful example of the old and the new coming together to make us say 'woah'.
This traditional 'Flora motif' was commissioned by the city council of Kolding, Denmark. The neon tubes are used to embroider the external building; They light up at night to create a light show.

The neon embroidery is used to make harmony with the Interior and Exterior. It also makes me think of Graffiti but in a more sophisticated and impressive way.
Krough's work crosses the lines between Art, Technology and Textile design and despite working with high tech materials she stays true to traditional Textiles. She says of her own work that working with highly advanced fibres still means she uses the same simple weaving techniques and that she finds it fascinating to rely on old craftsman techniques to take new materials to the cutting edge...
...I like her !

Heleen Klopper's woolfiller

I came across Heleen Kloppers Woolfiller at a demonstration she gave at the V&A gallery. It is a simple and excellent idea. Fill the holes in woolens with fibres of wool containing minuscule scales which open up when they are pricked many times with a needle.Once the open scales bind with each other they cannot be separated! I also think that woolfiller creates some interesting effects like this one >>>>

The elbow patches are something I would like to play with. I watched some lady at the demonstration fill in a holey jumper and she looked extremely satisfied pricking away at it.....

Fruit Pastels

I drew these trousers from an image in my mind. It would be really cool to print some fabric that had this kind of scratchy mish mash of pencil, and then either sew or print a darker coloured pattern on top of that, or even to applique on this with wild colours....

This is groooovey writing. I especially love the poliemans hat covering the cheeky mans big banana(im being kind)

These types of neon,burnt- out acid colours are having a bit of a moment. I spotted some particularly interesting William Morris type florals combined with neons on a recent trip to the V & A gift shop. This poster is by Paz Lenchantin (the bass chick from 90s grunge band A.P.C ) Her blog is pretty good http://pazarazzi.tumblr.com/

Also this is the best dip- dye i ever seen ! ;O
